We have read with great interest the study done by Kus et al,' in which they find that suppressor lymphocytes are decreased in number in a patient with Churg-Strauss syndrome. They hypothesize on the possible role that these T-lymphocyte subpopulations might play in the pathogenesis of this syndrome. We have studied the average percent ofT-lymphocyte subpopula-tions in peripheral blood using monoclonal antibodies in 152 patients with bronchial asthma and/or extrinsic allergic rhinitis and in 30 healthy subjects (control group). We have found significantly decreased 0Km levels in patients with respiratory allergy as compared to the control group (allergic 25.35, control 30.46; p<O.OOl). This suggests that a pathogenic role is played by these T-lymphocyte subpopulations in allergic disease, as other authors have affirmed.2 Tse et al3 have also found a significant decrease in suppressor lymphocytes in patients with bronchial asthma (without Churg-Strauss syndrome). Our study also demonstrates, as does Hsieh,4 a decrease in helper lymphocytes (OKT4) in patients with respiratory allergy (Table 1). It is possible that the patient studied by Kus et al, who had pathologic levels of IgE, presented changes in suppressor lympho-cytes as a manifestation of a respiratory allergy. Lymphocyte subpopulations in allergic granulomatosis and an-giitis (Churg-Strauss). Imbalances of T-cell subpopulations in patients with atopic diseases and effect of specific immunotherapy. Table 1-Results ofT-lymphocytes subpopulations in the 30 healthy subjects and 152 patients affected by respiratory allergy Lymphocytes subpopulations in asthmatics. 4 Hsieh KH. Changes of lymphoproliferation responses of T-cell subsets to allergen and mitogen after hyposensitization in asthmatic children. We agree that the literature cited demonstrates changes in T-cell subpopulations as suggested with decreased OKT8, although unlike J ustribo et al, other authors " 2 do not observe decreased OKT4 and therefore report an increased OKT4IOKT8. We would further agree that this appears to be markers of respiratory allergy and note the evidence that, with treatment of the allergy, improvement toward normal can be observed in these parameters.' We would note, …

Evaluation of the effects of Ramadan fasting on lymphocyte subpopulations in a two‐year follow‐up
Today, the intractions of the immune system of the immune system, nutrition, and nervous system are one of the main research areas of interest in immunology and disease treatment. Due to changes in the mood, behavior, and diet of an individual during fasting period, the body's internal homeostasis is affected. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of Ramadan fasting on lympho...
متن کاملALTERATION OF T-LYMPHOCYTE SUBPOPULATIONS IN SUBACUTE AND CHRONIC BRUCELLOSIS
Human brucellosis is a major health problem in developing countries. A number of patients with human brucellosis do not recover from the acute stage of the disease and pass into the chronic form. Since the pathophysiology of this change is not well understood, we studied the T-cell subsets during the acute, subacute and chronic forms of human brucellosis. In this study we found alterations...
متن کاملDetermination of lymphocytes surface markers in patients with thermal burns and the influence of burn size on mononuclear cell subsets
Background: Thermal burn injuries impair the host defence system. Hence, in the present study, we aimed at investigating the changes in the number and phenotype of peripheral blood lymphocyte populations (T, B, and natural killer cells) and their subpopulations in patients with thermal burns and determining the relationships with different sizes of total body surface area (TBSA). ...
متن کاملSubpopulations of circulating B cells and regulatory T cells involved in in vitro immunoglobulin E production in atopic patients with elevted serum immunoglobulin E.
The B lymphocyte subpopulations producing immunoglobulin (Ig)E and the regulatory T cells modulating this IgE production in normals, and in atopic patients with respiratory allergy, atopic dermatitis, and markedly elevated serum IgE levels (>5,000 ng/ml), were investigated. Peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL) were separated into T and B cell fractions and the ability of B cells to produce IgE in...
متن کاملEvaluation of Immunological Parameters in Purified Protein Derivative Positive Tuberculin Workers
Objective(s): According to the occupationally risk of infection in staff workers who have direct contact with mycobacterium species, we investigated their immunological parameters and compared with healthy purified protein derivative (PPD) negative volunteers. Materials and Methods : We investigated 20 PPD positive volunteers working at Tuberculin Unit of Razi Vaccine and Serum Research Ins...
